Will Morrill

Community Initiative Scholarship

The Will Morrill Community Initiative Scholarship through Trips For Kids Charlotte was established to honor the memory of Will Morrill who, passed away in November of 2018.  Will shared his passion for cycling and bicycle mechanics to empower the community around him.

Will's Wheels

Will was a frequent volunteer of the Charlotte Re-Cyclery and an inspiration to the people around him.  From an early age, Will had the passion for cycling and bicycle mechanics.  Through his work as a volunteer, Will expanded on his interest and shared his skills with people in his community by teaching cycling classes to Scout groups and by setting up a neighborhood bike shop in his parent's garage called "Will's Wheels."

In a high school essay, Will wrote, "Through my work at the Re-Cyclery, I have been able to share my passion for bicycles with others, teach some of the skills that I have learned, and help out my community."

Will understood the benefits of cycling and identified a need for bicycle support in his community.  The Will Morrill Community Initiative embodies the numerous stories of Will taking the initiative to address the need and ensure the people around him had safe and functional bicycles.  The scholarship will reflect the gift that Will provided to get that person “rolling” on two wheels and to plant the seed that cycling can change lives and bring smiles.

Each year, a $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded to one graduating senior high school student entering a two-year, four-year college or technical school

To be considered for the Scholarship applicants may be attending any public Charlotte-Mecklenburg County school.  Past and current Trips For Kids Charlotte program participants are encouraged to apply.  Well-rounded high school seniors who demonstrate a significant commitment of volunteer service to our community are encouraged to apply.
