Mecklenburg County's Solid Waste Program recognized Trips for Kids Charlotte as the winner of the annual Recycling Excellence Award on Earth Day, April 22, 2022. Jeff Smithberger, the Director of Solid Waste Management, presented the award at the Sustain Charlotte Sustainability Awards.
Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Management Program partners with Sustain Charlotte and presented a special Recycling Excellence Award to recognize outstanding efforts that result in landfill waste diversion. The judging criteria includes innovative solutions to waste reduction, educate and benefit the broader community, approach can be scaled up and strengthens the local economy.

Our recycling efforts at TFKC come as a by product of the work we do to serve our community and youth by recognizing the bicycle as a vital tool. Our community bike shop program, the Charlotte Re-Cyclery, enables us to participate in circular economy, helping us fund our youth programming while we provide affordable, safe bicycles, accessories, and bike components to the community. Through your generous help with bike donations, bicycle break-down events, monetary donations, and the gift of your time spent volunteering, we, as an organization and community, are able to reroute approximately 75,000 pounds of bicycle related waste from entering the Charlotte area landfill. We are immensely proud of the work we are all able to accomplish together, and incredibly grateful for the support we receive from our community.
We want to recognize and thank ALL of Charlotte's non-profit organizations who stood alongside us at the Sustain Charlotte 2022 Sustainability Gala for their impact to our community. Each was equally as deserving of this special award for their efforts in bettering our environment, community, and city. Special thanks to Duke Energy, Sustain Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County's Waste Management Program for hosting the award ceremony, fostering a sustainable community, and presenting us with the Recycling Excellence Award. We can't wait to see how much more we are all able to do as we continue working together for a better future.
